Two Leading Voices in Economics Education
The 2nd Annual C.A.P.E. conference is honored to feature plenary addresses from two of the most influential and widely read economics educators in the country.

Gregory Mankiw
Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics
Harvard University
Gregory Mankiw is the Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University. As a student, he studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. As a teacher, he has taught macroeconomics, microeconomics, statistics, and principles of economics. He even spent one summer long ago as a sailing instructor on Long Beach Island. Professor Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, and in more widely accessible forums, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. He has written two popular textbooks, the intermediate-level textbook Macroeconomics (Worth Publishers) and the introductory textbook Principles of Economics (Cengage Learning). Principles of Economics has sold over four million copies and has been translated into twenty languages. In addition to his teaching, research, and writing, Professor Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Congressional Budget Office and the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston and New York, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005 he served as Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

Dirk Mateer
Professor of Instruction
University of Texas at Austin
Dirk Mateer is the author of Economics in the Movies (2005), Essentials of Economics (2015, 2021), and Principles of Economics (2013, 2017, 2020, 2023, 2026). Dirk's work has appeared in the Journal of Economic Education on seven occasions. His website, dirkmateer.com, houses over 500 media assets that relate economics to popular culture. Dirk is also an award-winning instructor. Dirk received the Kenneth Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award from the Southern Economic Association in 2021. Prior to arriving at UT-Austin, he was featured in the "Great Teachers in Economics" series and he was also the inaugural winner of the Economic Communicator Contest. While he was at Penn State, he received the George W. Atherton Award, the university's highest teaching award, and was voted the best overall teacher in the Smeal College of Business by the readers of Critique Magazine. While at the University of Arizona, he received the best large class lecture award in the Eller College of Management and the University's Koffler Teaching Prize, a quadrennial award for his contributions in economic education.
